John 13:34-35 A new commandment, Maundy Thursday!

We are starting a new tradition this morning here at The Daily Bible Challenge. On Maundy Thursday each year, we will switch to the accounts of the Easter/Holy Week, like we shift gears at Christmas for the birth accounts. We will resume 2nd Chronicles on Monday.

We are headed back to the New Testament for Today’s Daily Bible Challenge in John 13. This is where we get the name for this day in Holy Week. This day is named Maundy Thursday; Maundy is from the Latin root word madatum, or in English, mandate, which means commandment. So if you have been around many churches for years, this is not a commandment to eat pancakes, LOL. I don’t know where that tradition came from, but many churches have celebrated this day with a pancake breakfast at the church for many, many years!

But there is a new commandment from Jesus in this chapter in verses 13:34-35. At our church, we live by this commandment! We love abundantly and err on the side of loving too much to be safe. There is more to this chapter, as we see the first washing of the feet ceremony, many of us will understand Peter’s awkwardness about his Master washing his feet as a servant. I hope your pastor is humble enough not to be above this behavior! How would you feel if your pastor came out of the pulpit and wanted to wash your feet? We would probably all be a little like Peter here!?

We also read/listen to the account of Judas starting the betrayal of Jesus. There is some scary stuff in that part! I wonder what was going through Judas’s mind when he was handed the dipped bread? This is a deep day of reflection for most, but Good Friday is even more complicated and reflective. But that is for tomorrow! Click the link below and listen to John 13 to start your day, then maybe go get some pancakes…

  Talk with you soon!
