2nd Samuel 24 Why did counting the people make God so mad?
Good Monday morning! Well, I hope we will not be held accountable by our community for the stowaway that must have been in the bed of our truck, on the way home from Missouri (this nasty winter weather)! The high winds and cold chased us all the way home, making for an adventure behind the wheel for nine plus hours of driving! So yes, Texas, we are the ones responsible for bringing the cold and wind to Texas yesterday, and we stand corrected for our foolish mistake. Please accept our sincere apologies!
Madeline and I unloaded the truck into the house and then collapsed into bed. But what a great trip that was! We had shirtsleeve weather the whole time, and for us, that is good! I can get chilled to the bone here in the south, and was concerned how I would hold up if they got single-digit weather while we were there! Well, I am rambling on and on about the weather, let’s get to Today’s Daily Bible Challenge in the 24th and final chapter of 2nd Samuel.
I had always wondered why counting the people made God so mad in this chapter and the other account of this incident in 1st Chronicles 21:1. Today, I dug in a little deeper and watched a video from Gotquestions.org and found out! After all, I woke up at 3am, so I had plenty of time before publishing this morning! If you go to https://youtu.be/PqWdv_KODvc you can watch the same video. At about the 6:35 mark on the video, he reveals what was hidden from a mere casual read of the text I had done in the past. You see, it was a huge insult (culturally) to count another man’s property without his direct instructions to do so. Well, that is just what King David did when he took a census of Israel’s people! Those people and that whole land belong to God, not King David!
Wow, how could I have overlooked that? Oh, that's right, I took it out of context! That is why we read the whole Bible cover to cover in context here at The Daily Bible Challenge! In context means more than just reading the whole chapter; it means to do a bit of digging to find out the Who, Why, When, Where, and any cultural differences that might affect the meaning of the material! No, I don’t claim to be a Biblical Scholar, my calling is to convince you to read the Bible to learn more about the God that our times ignores! If we learn more about Him, we will begin to see Him in all His creation, all around us on a daily basis! He will reveal Himself to you if you honestly pursue Him with an open heart and mind. In fact, some, like Lee Strobel, pursued the truth about God with complete skepticism, and still God revealed Himself to him in full glory!
So please join us here daily as we pursue God through His inspired word! If you have questions or comments, we welcome them through PM/DM, on any platform you are reading this on! You will be answered by Madeline or me, not a bot or automatic response!
Talk with you soon!
