Deuteronomy 15 The Year of Jubilee Sounds a Bit Like Bankruptcy!
Good Tuesday morning, we are in Deuteronomy 15 this morning for Today’s Daily Bible Challenge. What a difference following this chapter would make in this world! So the year of Jubilee is every seven years. There is so much to learn from this concept of the Jewish people and law. Where to begin, let’s see, you really can’t sell your land, it belongs to you and then your future heirs. It may be called selling, but you are only selling the use, like a lease. The price you charge is only what the land can produce in the time left before the year of Jubilee. In the seventh year, your land comes back to you. I love the part of this chapter that says there should be no poor, but it makes allowances for there being poor. I guess this is to make up for the expected bad decisions that people seem to always make!
We also see the concept of a bond servant, someone who is bound to you to work to pay back a debt, but decides to stay as your servant after the debt is fully paid. But if they choose to leave instead, before declaring the bondservant role, they are free to go in the year of Jubilee. The seal of the bondservant is a piercing of the left ear with an awl into the door frame. Some reflect on this as Jesus’ being pierced, but that would lower him to being our servant, but I think we are His. But His teaching on being servants as leaders is also well documented! I renew my oath as His bondservant every morning as I put on my little silver cross made of nails. I poke my left earlobe to remind myself who I am! I love knowing my identity as his son and bondservant. But He told us we are raised from that role to friends, even heirs, sons and daughters of the Most High! I openly admit I struggle with that identity and feel more comfortable as His bondservant. But I also accept the role of son/friend, simply because He said so! He doesn’t tell lies!
