Numbers 4 Load um up men!
Good morning, it's Thursday, and it's a busy day for us here at The Little Hundred Acre Wood. I hope your day is full of something that inspires you! As I read Numbers 4 for Today’s Daily Bible Challenge, I found myself pondering how good it must have been to have such clear instructions from God on what your responsibilities were as Levites. If you were of this family, you did this, and if of that family, you did such and such. To have such a clear understanding of your purpose must be freeing. But with human nature, many would feel trapped by such a life. I, for one, would love such clear direction.
I also ponder just how difficult some of this would have been. You would need to be able-bodied to perform most of the tasks outlined in Numbers 3 & 4. You see, those curtains you have been put in charge of weigh more than even Goliath could have lifted. Some of these curtains were hundreds of feet long and tens of feet tall. The curtain to shield the entrance to the Ark was 4 inches thick. Metal rings were holding these curtains up, and those would add to all this weight. These people were still nomadic at this point, so all this had to be loaded up on carts and/or camels to be moved to the next destination on this many-year sojourn! Oh, that lamp stand was solid gold and huge too, and the altars and everything had to be taken down, stored in special cloths, and moved too. This explains why there were thousands of people dedicated to these responsibilities.
These books of the Bible are so much more interesting if you imagine yourself right there in the scene, living out this lifestyle. If you can open up your mind’s eyes to do this, it will come to life for you, too! But I admit there will be chapters where that is not easy, such as the one we finished up early this week. Leviticus and some others give this blog its name. The Daily Bible “Challenge”! I have been given a role in God’s kingdom work, too! My job, at least for the foreseeable future, is to inspire you to join us on this challenge, where we start listening to God about God instead of listening to all the gossip about God that this world tries to distract us with!
