Leviticus 16 Scapegoat
Good morning, we are in Leviticus 16 for Today’s Daily Bible Challenge. Please join us as each of us becomes one of the statistical few who have actually read the whole Bible cover to cover! Just how many Bibles do you have around your house, and then ask yourself, have you read any of them? Yes, I am sure many of you have, but many who proclaim to be Christians have only heard what a preacher says, one verse here and another there. Or worse, they have only listened to complete strangers in person, or on the internet like me! I don’t want you to trust me, I want you to trust God, and what better way to learn to trust God than to actually start listening to Him fully, in context! About once a month, you will hear me saying we are here to stop listening to gossip about God and start listening to God about God!
I hope this journey through the Bible will be full of prayers asking God to reveal Himself to you through His words in the Bible. Here at the Daily Bible Challenge, we believe the whole Bible is God’s inspired word, so we should read every word, even if it is just to honor God respectfully. So, as we all struggle to get through Leviticus (one of the most difficult books of the Bible) I promise you it gets better as we go, so please don’t quit in the hard part, let’s keep pushing on through so we can know in our hearts we have read/listened to it all cover to cover!
As I read/listened to chapter 16 this morning, I kept thinking about how these animal sacrifices went on all year, but today’s reading is about a special ceremony that was once a year. There were hundreds of thousands of animals sacrificed each year to cover each man’s or woman’s individual sins all year long. What a huge mess all of this must have been. As a student, I would love to travel back in time to see how all this happened, but I am not sure I would be able to stomach it! One other important part in this morning's text is the term scapegoat. Did you know that was a Biblical term? Please pay special attention to how this played out each year. There is great significance to this scapegoat!
