Genesis 36 Just what is a Concubine

 Good morning and Happy Sabbath to those celebrating on Sunday. If yesterday was your Sabbath, shalom! Please do not look for things to divide us. Regardless of what day, we are all worshiping God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and in that, we can unite to serve our King and Savior!

   Today’s Daily Bible Challenge is made possible due to the many years of hard work and service from Blue Letter Bible! (bluelettterbible.org)! They provide the audiobook of the Bible for all of our use! Please consider supporting them financially in their efforts to spread the word of God throughout the world! That is part of my mission too, as I try to get newbies and seasoned Christians to simply read their whole Bible cover to cover to learn more about their Savior Jesus, the one who is the Christ! What could be easier than clicking on a link and listening to a chapter or two a day!

   Today we are in chapter 36 of Genesis, and these are the chapters that make it a challenge (at least in my opinion)!  If you want to see my eyes roll over, just start talking about genealogy! So when I get to these parts, I try to find something in the text that is interesting! Today, that is the mention of concubines and is one of the first mentions of such a situation. The term is defined by most as a slave/wife with some of the rights of a wife, but not with full wife status! Many times they were to provide childbearing when a wife was barren. But some seemed to be just for sexual pleasure. Yeppers, this is in the Bible, and you thought it was just a boring old book! When I did a little research on “gotquestions.org”, the best part of their article for me was this quote;

 “God’s original intent was for marriage to be between one man and one woman, and that has never changed (Genesis 1:27). As a matter of fact, a study of the lives of men like King David and King Solomon (who had 300 concubines; 1 Kings 11:3) reveals that many of their problems stemmed from polygamous relationships (2 Samuel 11:2-4).”

   In all my years of reading God’s word, when it came to multiple wives, I thought how complicated life would become in such a situation! I am fully satisfied with the one wife God has blessed me with and could never consider wanting anything more than the blessing she is to me! I try hard to be such a blessing to her also!

   The one other minor detail from chapter 36 is that they describe several of the descendants as chiefs, which is defined as a kind of local minor king. It is a failing of the English language to have a good word for this translation. Chief seems too small, but King is too large! Click the link below to listen for yourself!

   Talk with you soon!
