Genesis 10 and Nimrod the great hunter before the Lord

Good morning to all in whatever corners of the world this letter might reach! What an amazing time we live in. I can click these keys on this keyboard and write to someone ten thousand miles away, and they read it in mere moments after it is posted. Some of us saw many of today’s technologies born, and some were born without knowing what it was like to live without them!

This reminds me of my late brother-in-law, he was an interesting sort, he had little use for tech, and his life was much like Nimrod (Noah’s great-grandson) he was described here as “the great hunter before the Lord’ in chapter 10 of Genesis for Today’s Daily Bible Challenge.

You see, my brother-in-law was an accomplished hunter also, and grew bored with the ease with which he could hunt with a rifle. You see, he was in special forces in Vietnam, and the use of a rifle was second nature to him. Now, because of the kind of larger-than-life character he was, rather than go buy a modern compound bow and composite arrow shafts with razor-sharp metal points. He made a traditional native american bow from all authentic materials and then arrow shafts from local trees, and feathers collected while hunting through the years, and a sinew to fasten it all together.

Oh, and one more thing, he made his own arrowheads, “points” out of stone. This was a six-year full-time journey for him as he learned enough by books and trial and error, before taking his first deer with his own traditional bow and arrow!  I have one of his earlier arrows, in a shadowbox frame hanging in my office above me. That arrow brings me fond memories of this unique man I got the privilege of knowing in this life. He was definitely different, but in so many ways a pleasure to know, but he sure marched to the beat of a different drummer than most of us! He was a real-life Indiana Jones kind of guy. I imagine Nimrod was such a charactor too, a real man’s man recognised by God for his abilities.

I try hard here to get you to see these people in the Bible as real people, not just some made-up characters in a novel. If you do a little digging for yourself, you will find many of the cities mentioned here in the Bible have been found, and many records of these people still exist to this day. The Bible is real, and so is God, so faith in these things reveals your wisdom, not foolishness!
